Mark Patterson financial

"What first drew you into finance?"

In 1994, I decided to become a stock broker, as there was no such thing as a “financial advisor” back then. I finished grad school and got an offer to set up an equity (stocks) trading desk in Midtown Manhattan through a contact I had met at Tucker Anthony, where I had already been working. That’s where I first saw people trading bonds on the international bond desk. They would package up bonds from all over the world and sell them to pension funds. I really enjoyed watching them build portfolios for their clients. That sparked my interest in the portfolio-creation side of things. Watching the creativity and strategy involved in bond trading made me realize that what I really enjoy, then and today, is designing and managing portfolios.

"Why did you decide to become an independent advisor?"

Working independently allows me to build portfolios and not have to sell product. I like to create and manage portfolios which benefit the client. There are less profit centers (as in middle men) to deal with. I’d rather just cut to the chase and create a custom portfolio for my client that ends up costing less than prefabricated funds.

"What do you value most in working with clients?"

I get satisfaction when I can take an underperforming portfolio, or one with a bad fee structure, and turn it into a custom portfolio that works for them (the client). This allows me to take time to listen to and decipher what they really want and therefore, what they really need investment-wise.

"What is your approach to portfolio management?"

It's important that I understand the purpose of the portfolio. If it’s for income, I need to make sure that it does that - if it’s for growth, then I need to make sure it does that. Making sure it's low-cost is also very important. This means I am going to use individual stocks, bonds, or low cost ETFs (exchange traded funds).  I also use some techniques that are not well known, such as using options and other derivatives to create extra income, or hedge the portfolio. I also try to employ Modern Portfolio Theory, using non-correlated assets which lowers volatility and enhances the return. I am always looking at risk/reward, trying to see if I can secure more returns without incurring more risk.

"What are your credentials?"

While I have an M.B.A in finance and a strong background in economics, managing portfolios is all about experience. Over many years as a financial advisor, you stretch your abilities, balance risk, learn from mistakes, and get better every day. I’ve been in this business for 25 years, through some hard times and volatile markets. Your best learning happens during different phases of the markets.

"Are you open to new clients?"

Yes! It's all about the fit. Your relationship with your financial advisor is an important one and it has to be the right fit for both of us.

"How do I know if we're a good fit?"

I can look at your current situation and tell you how I feel about it. If your portfolio already looks great,  I’ll be the first one to tell you so, but if I think I can improve upon it and you agree, there is probably a good reason to do business.

"What do you love most about your work?"

Being able to manage portfolios for my clients. I enjoy seeing decisions that we have made together pay off into something tangible. Clients often tell me that they feel relieved to know that someone is looking out for them and retirement funds. I enjoy being that person.
